ERS 2017 Milaan

The European Respiratory Society (ERS) held its international congress in 2017 in Milan, Italy, from 9th to 13th September.
The congress is the largest of its kind, and in 2017 welcomed 22,121 participants from 130 countries and 169 exhibitors.

Session topics at the conference are wide ranging and broadly cover respiratory disease and basic science. In 2017, the most common topics for abstracts were:
• Clinical Problems
• Diffuse parenchymal lung disease
• Airway pharmacology and treatment
• Rehabilitation and chronic care
• Monitoring airway disease
• Sleep and control of breathing
• Physiotherapists
• Respiratory structure and function
• Respiratory infections
• Tuberculosis

The top 10 countries represented at the conference by number of participants were:
• UK
• Italy
• France
• Germany
• Spain
• Netherlands
• Switzerland
• India
• Turkey

Amongst conference delegates, 31% were clinicians, 22% were clinician researchers, and 17% were researchers. The rest of the delegates comprised students, allied professionals, GPs, and hospital managers, amongst other professions.

The ERS annual congress is a unique annual event, and an excellent opportunity for early stage researchers to present their work, engage in discussion with experts from around the world, and develop their network further. The broad diversity of session topics allows us to learn about work not directly related to our field of expertise, helping us to become broader minded, and better, researchers
