Policy on patient-related research
Longfonds adheres to established guidelines when funding and supporting scientific research. We are a member of the Vereniging Fondsenwervende Instellingen (VFI) (in Dutch), the Dutch association for charitable fundraising organisations. In addition, scientific research in the Netherlands is subject to national guidelines. Longfonds has used these guidelines as the basis for its policy on scientific research involving human participants.
If a research project involves human participants, the research proposal should, in principle, be submitted to a Medical Research Ethics Committee (METC) before the funding application is submitted, and a preliminary or final decision should have been issued by the committee. Researchers must also comply with the FMWV’s Code of Conduct for the Responsible Use of Human Tissue.
Medicinal products
Research involving human participants must also be registered with the Central Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects (CCMO) and, where applicable, in the relevant Dutch trial registry. If medicinal products are used as part of the research, responsibility for complying with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements lies with the researcher or their institution.
Research funding
Research funding will only be released once Longfonds has received approval from the relevant Medical Research Ethics Committee (METC).
