Research policy
Longfonds funds scientific research into lung diseases. Research is essential to preventing, treating and curing lung diseases. That is why we dedicate at least 25% of our gross annual income to scientific research.
Science is the foundation
Longfonds is one of the largest private funders of lung research in Europe. We support more than 25 research projects in the Netherlands and internationally. Our research focuses on the following themes (in Dutch):
- Preventing asthma
- Repairing damaged lungs
- Early detection of lung diseases
- Personalised treatment
- Children and lung diseases
- Rare lung diseases
To achieve our ambitions, we bring leading scientists together. Over the past 65 years, Longfonds has contributed to major advances in lung research (in Dutch), including new treatments and medicines, greater involvement of people with lung conditions in research, and improvements in pulmonary rehabilitation.
All research we support must be relevant to people with lung conditions. Their perspectives and active involvement in scientific research therefore remain key priorities.
Scientific research advisory boards
Funding is awarded to research projects based on scientific quality and their relevance to society and people with lung conditions. Longfonds uses a peer-review system, with scientific quality as the primary assessment criterion. Societal relevance and relevance to people with lung conditions are also taken into account.
Based on reviews by national and international experts, the scientific research advisory boards advise the Longfonds Board on funding decisions. The advisory boards include representatives from various scientific disciplines as well as people with lung conditions.
Background
All research must be relevant to people with lung conditions. The patient perspective and patient involvement in scientific research therefore remain important areas of focus.
