Policy on the use of human biological materials

Longfonds adheres to established guidelines when funding and supporting scientific research. Longfonds is a member of the Dutch association for charitable organisations (in Dutch) and endorses its guidelines. In addition, scientific research in the Netherlands is subject to national guidelines. Longfonds has used these guidelines as the basis for its policy on scientific research involving human biological material.

The collection of human biological material from patients and research participants—including tissue, blood and sputum—for scientific research requires approval from a Medical Research Ethics Committee. Human biological material used for scientific research must be handled responsibly and with due care.

Code of Conduct for Responsible Use

The Code of Conduct for Responsible Use (Code Goed Gebruik) of the Federation of Dutch Medical Scientific Societies provides guidance on the use of human biological material for scientific research in cases not covered by approval from a Medical Research Ethics Committee. One example is the use of residual human biological material obtained during a surgical procedure.

The Code Goed Gebruik, explanatory information and further guidance are available from the Federation’s website. Researchers are expected to endorse the Code and comply with the relevant guidelines when conducting the proposed research.
